The Ultimate Dinner Party
Discussion
Now I realise that the P&P is made up of the many and varied aspects of humanity and that maybe some would rather pierce their own eyeballs with acid tipped skewers than endure a dinner party. However I'd ask you to suspend your disbelief and dislike of such occasions to consider the following question.
If you could invite anyone, alive or dead and at any point in their life, to a fully catered for dinner party, who would be there? Let's assume you have a table for six people so that leaves you with guests. We'll also assume that each and every guest will be equipped with a universal translator/babel fish/sci fi translator of choice. Communication will not be an issue. These must be real people, not fictional characters.
Obviously you'd want decent conversation but you wouldn't want the whole thing to descend into anarchy until at least until the brandy and cigars stage. No good inviting people who will be spoiling for a fight before the first course has hit the table.
For my choice I'd have the following
1. Barry Cryer. You need someone with a head full of anecdotes and one liners to dissipate any tension that might build up. Plus, of course, he is one of the funniest men on the planet.
2. Carl Sagan circa 1980 - Wisdom personified.
3. Isaac Asimov - Favourite author of mine, be desperately hoping he wasn't boring.
4. Brian Blessed - To shout for the waitress
5. Josie Lawrence - circa 1990 - Just because I think she's lovely and with enough wine I might have a shot
