Charging batteries on new phones for 2130592735 hours

Is it still necessary? Considering most phones probably stop charging once they detect it's at full capacity. I've never really done it, and never had any issues with battery life.

the longer the initial charge, the larger the battery capacity becomes I believe, up to a certain point obviously.

So i've heard anyway.

E.g, a battery initially charged for 16 hrs, will have a larger capacity than a battery that was initially charged for 8 hrs.

Though, I heard this a while ago, so don't know if that is the case with more current batteries.

Used to be the case for NiMh batteries I believe, but for the new Li-ion ones it doesn't make a difference AFAIK.

Yes, but who has ever had a new phone on which the battery is totally new and discharged and needing a full charge? Everyone I have had already has charge in it, so my first charge will not be the battery's first.

Got a new phone today and the instructions point out that the battery is half charged and will need no more than 3 hours charging before use.

I think it's one of those tips from the dark ages that stuck.

With modern batteries it is far more important not to trickle charge them for long periods of time. Kills the battery life quicker than anything else.

Wasn't it only for NiCad batteries which aren't used any more and it doesn't matter with the Lithium Ion batteries used these days?

Used to be an issue but now it isn't for most batts.

Yes I'm the sad fk who reads how long the battery needs to be charged for the first time everytime i get something which has rechargable batts.

Then again my 4 yearold Samsung still holds a charge for 3 days with moderate use so i must be doing something right!

they used to come flat and we would say give it 16 hours for a good first charge.


they come pre-charged now so no need to bother.
