To save you annoying your friends and relatives.
Christmas cards: check the envelope dimensions, especially the thickness. More than one fold in the cardboard or a bow or similar decoration can easily take it over the 5 mm limit. If you don't put the correct stamp on it the recipient will get a red card from Royal Mail, instead of your card.
Then, if my experience is typical, he'll use £1.50's worth of fuel on a Saturday morning driving to the sorting office. There, he'll stand in a long line in the cold until it's his turn to hand over £1.20 for the privilege of receiving your card. He'll then curse you for giving him all that trouble.
