Paper Aeroplanes

Spend a most enjoyable hour last evening chucking paper planes off the balcony on the 18th floor.

A few nose-dived into oblivion, one brilliant little fella actually gained height in the breeze and was last seen disappearing towards the horizon, and most circled around and crashed into the building lower down.

Most designs you see are for indoor planes, but off a high building, with breezes, what you need from my experience is roll stability, so a big tail/fuselage, small wings and lots of dihedral. A paperclip in the nose also helps. That 'world record' paper plane you see on the internet? Crap off a high building! It just turns over and plummets. The key also is to keep it going in a straight line, if it banks it will just circle and hit the building.

As a kid we had a book with loads of designs. The most fun was one supposed to be used in lecture theaters.... It would nose down, that made it gain speed and nose up glide a bit, nose down and so on.

You can do that if you put little elevators on the wings, the plane will gain height, stall, dive, gain height, stall, dive, etc.

I too have spent most of my life trying to find the perfect Paper Aeroplane design to no avail sadly...

The best I have come up with so far is a kind of Concord inpired shape but with the addition of folded up wing tips for some in flight stability (and if one side is folded up more than the other it will result in some pretty impressive barrel rolls!)

I've even managed to get a rudder on the back of mines but have yet to perfect that...

Any help would be appreciated!

I've always found wing tips that are turned down rather than up give much more stability

Probably had (actually still have) the same book.

Remember at school when I was about 12 having a nutty science lab technician guy helping a group of us lads with an experiment with paper planes. After school, with the aid of a home made hot air balloon we launched various designs from from said balloon at about 200 feet. Some plummeted, other disappeared into the distance. Good times!

Just remembered another one from school...

Lingering after an art class, a mate and I raided the paper store and made huge paper darts from A1 sheets of sugar paper. I launched one which hurtled the full length of the room before nosediving into a shelf full of pots of ink. These promptly scattered, lids off, onto the lower shelves and drawers full of paper and other kids art works, covering them all in a rainbow of technicolour splashes. We didn't hang around to find out what happened next!
