can somebody please explain what in stock means
Discussion
Because i am a lazy basterd I have been doing my christmas shopping on the net, I have only bought stuff that is ex stock or in stock from.
Play.com 3 days
The only ones that seem to tell the truth.
The hut 8 days
Asda 11 days not yet delivered, say they have a problem with supplier
HMV 8 days not yet delivered
Comet 11 days said I have to stay in all day, it was delivered by carrier
To me it seems that it means they may or may not have it in stock and they might send it out when we get around to it as we already have your money.
Is it me?

Could you possibly be suggesting that suppliers lie about whats in stock. Well I never. What a turn up for the books. Never would have believed it.Play.com 3 days

You have to remember that you're ordering products at the busiest time of the year.
Online shopping useage has gone up in these hard times so they're still under some strain.
The products will be in stock, but there's only so many deliveries they can do in one day, hence the delay.
As long as you get it and, if you have to wait in for it they tell you which day you're going to get it, be thankful.

So Comet imply they deliver on their own transport and thats why it will be so long, and it comes by parcel force.........they were lieingOnline shopping useage has gone up in these hard times so they're still under some strain.

What is really funny is I live 1 mile from their main distribution centre.

I agree with most of what you said but hang on one tick.I should be grateful someone has deigned to fulfil my order with them? I bloody well demand that they do. If you tell me it is going to take 10 days then that is my call. Don't tell me it is going to be 5 and then expect me to be happy it has taken 9 without some damn good reasons.
We nearly got royally screwed over last Christmas by a number of people who failed spectacularly to keep to their word/maximum time scale/genuine stock and only by dint of me and the g/f pulling out all the stops, a few lucky breaks and a massive amount more agro than should have been required were we able to pull it round.

It means it's in stock somewhere. Perhaps at their local warehouse, perhaps at a central location, perhaps with a supplier or perhaps on a ship from China
This is true. Often the seller is just the middle man between you and the wholesaler.
Problems come when the wholesaler tells the seller that they have things in stock and either they are simply lying or another seller gets them first.
Err it means it is in stock. The problemnis a lot of online retailers do not run a real time stock system. The main problem is allocating stock to an order. Practically all retailers will only allocate stock when the order is placed. The problem lies where the retailer has five in stock but 7 people have the item in their shopping basket. It wont update the stock status until those baskets have been checked out and the orders have been processed.
Don't know if anyone else is getting fed the same b
ks but the only internet co that still hasn’t delivered is The Hut, when you call them they say they dispatched on 10th Dec, they blame a company called Entertainment UK who they say are part of Woolworth’s. And they won’t give me my f
king money back until another 10 working days has past.So what does "in stock" actually mean?

Basically you purchased an item from company A, where the item was in stock with a company B thats now gone under(ish). So all they'll be able to do is refund you once they know whats going on with Company B.
But thats the price of companys failing.

Who is policing Internet companies to ensure they don't lie?
I have a friend (yes a friend) who owns an internet co, and over the last few weeks they have been inundated by phone calls to check they actually have the goods, because another company has lied and let them down.

Problem with ordering from Play / HMV is they ship from Jersey / Guernsey so although stuff's a lot cheaper it takes a long time to be delivered.
Wehn i used to order Vinyl from HMV i'd have to wait up to 10 working days for delivery & everything used to come in separate containers.
So Pointless!
