Urgent! Portable Gas Heater Advice Please

With superb timing our oil boiler has failed...

We have a portable gas heater that takes 12kg butane bottles (handy gas), but it's proving impossible to get replacement cylinders.

Can I safely replace the regulator and convert it to run on the more readily available propane bottles?
