Anybody done one?

We often have good job applicants who have the basic job skills but whose English (mainly spelling) isn't good enough as the job has a fairly high paperwork content and docs to to outside agencies so the spelling has to be fairly good. Seems a pity just to turn them away when for the sake of one of these 6-15 hour courses we could put the problem right.

I wondered if anyone had done or had experience of the higher level courses which improve spelling, grammar, punctuation etc to a sort of GCSE standard?

Can you actually teach a grown-up to spell, though (not saying you can't, just asking) as it seems to me that if people can read a word a thousand times and still not be able to spell it then they are beyond help. For instance, the bloke that wrote 'egsort' in a recent Ebay advertisement, how many times would he have seen the word correctly spelt, in adverts and on the walls of exhaust centres.

I hope I'm wrong. Maybe it's a case of getting the person concerned to actually LOOK at the way words they are reading, and writing, and compare the two.

I once had learn direct access - my god, I wouldn't even call the IT courses I saw GCSE level.

I think you can teach the 'rules' like I before E and word endings/tenses. You can learn the semantic differemces between Assure, Ensure and Insure, Except/Accept or that There, There and They're mean different things (and please, that it is would HAVE not would OF.
