Choosing a washing machine - any suggestions???

Currently loking for a new washing machine - urgently...

I don't really have any idea about the various makes, which ones are the best quality etc. I'm looking in the £300 - £450 range and have a list comprised of Bosch, Hoover, Hotpoint, Indesit and Zanussi.

I don't need one with fancy features, inbuilt gadgets that are never used etc just one that washes/rinses/spins well and that's it. And of course a reliable one.

Can anyone help with any suggestions?

Odd. Our Hotpoint washing (NOT Dryer) machine lasted us flipping years

If you can get it from Costco you will get a warranty for as long as you are a member, if it breaks in 10 years you get a refund!

Miele.

I think this can be summed up pretty well for all these kind of questions:

Dishwasher: Miele
Washing Machine: Miele
Tumble Dryer: Miele
Vacuum Cleaner: Miele
Oven: Miele
Hob: Miele

I think that covers larger domestic appliances.

Avoid Smeg - we bought a Smeg oven as it was a bit cheaper than an equivalent Miele, but one of the settings no longer works at just under 2 years old. Wish I'd have spent the extra 50 quid or so on the Miele now.

Another vote for Miele here.I bought one earlier this year and my sisters lasted her over 20 years(and was on all the time as she has 3 kids).Naturally she replaced it with another Miele

Used to be a fan of all things Hoover but rather gone off them lately.

Until I saw one I thought Smeg was something out of Red Dwarf.

Bosch. Buy the cheapest version that meets your requirements. Job done.

Miele are very good, but expensive to buy and viciously expensive to have fixed if they go wrong (and oh yes, they do go wrong)

If your on your own just get a cheap thing with a decent spin speed,yes bosch aeg milie are better but you wont see the value unless you use it alot.I.e if a family use their washing machine each day and it lasts a year thats probably about three years at least for a single bloke

Very energy efficient.

A program to look after any kind of fabric you can imagine.

Deathly quiet.

For that budget, I'd go for Bosch or Siemens. I don't know much about them myself but my old dear reckons her Siemens is the best washer she's ever had.

If you dont want to spend on a Miele - anything from either the Electrolux stable ( AEG , Zanussi etc . ) or Bosch or Siemens are all good quality mid-range products. John Lewis own-brand are (apparently re-badged Zanussi's - and have a good guarantee )

Avoid anything else : all the British and other brands are now manufactured to low quality standards under anther brand "umbrella".
