What use would a four minute warning be??

Ok,

In the sixties/seventies there was always talk about our four minute warning nuclear response capability...in other words if Russkie missiles were on the way,.. RAF Fylingdales or somesuch would detect them, flash a message to our PM who would have spilt seconds to decide a course of retalitory action.....

Presumably he/she would have a brief case to hand with all the secret codes to initiate our "reply"..

However, what if our glorious leader was playing Golf, asleep, unobtainable for whatever reason....what then??

Same applies to the USA, Russia or any other nuclear power...

I have 2 thoughts on this....

1.Use? in the region of fk all.....unless you bought one of those plantable NBC hideouts and had all your supplies ready (that should give you an extra minute or so....). I once had a little blue pamphlet outlining minimum requirements for NBC shelters.....anyone else ever have one?

2.Otherwise, it'll give you just enough time to st yourself repeatedly, and get the codgers out of their front doors.

I once had a role that would have meant driving a few miles, going underground and then plotting EMP and fallout. But to get there quickly? It wouldn't have happened.

Not to mention the lack of bakalite phones (to avoid the impact of EMP).
