On an average well-how long from spud date is it until you know whether you have oil or not?

Shirly that would be mud loggers? Or are they all engineers now just like MCSEs?

That's a minimum. Harsher environments may be as much as a 100 days. As Technology moves on drilling rigs get faster. The rig we're currently designing / building has twin Derricks and can Spud with one and simultaneously directional drill with the other.

Mud Loggers and Mud Engineers are two different professions, the first look into what's inside the well/borehole, the second get their information from the first and make sure that the drill is properly lubricated during drilling.
