Official Bottled Water Vs Tap Thread

Right, I just walked into a heated debate between a mate and an Italian colleague. They were arguing over the bottled water dispenser which the Italians saying that the bottled water is far better for you.

I filled my water bottle with tap water and was promptly told i was going to die

So, clever people of pistonheads, what is better for you, or is it as i believe marketing hype.

I don't know about better for you or not.

However i do know that by us (midlands) the water tastes vile due to being in hard water area. so we have to buy drinking water from supermarket.

Richard Hammond did a programme about exactly this a year or so ago.....tap was the answer.

So heavily processed water stuck in plastic bottles for 2 years is better for you than stuff that has come out of the tap.

Someone I know who works for a reputable Scottish bottled water company once told me that there is less then 0.5% difference in the chemical make-up between their water and tap water.

It's also not a good idea to keep a plastic bottle around for too long if you take to refilling it.

st water where he is from in Italy probably. Most places I have been in Italy it all comes out the tap.

I think he is just dumb media believing fool.

Depends where the water is from. During the floods I was given many varieties of bottled water & it all tasted the same. The tap water in my flat is luvly but at my bro's place in London foul. The tap water in the tower tastes of pencil sharpenings.

Surely it's entirely dependant on the mineral content of the two?

Tap water were I live tastes fine, and after many years of drinking it, cooking with it, bathing and showering in it I've still got a full head of hair and the correct number of limbs.

Bottled water comes complete with recognised branding and marketing hype. The Italian has clearly been brainwashed like many others.

Hard water tastes better than bottled water / soft water.

technically tap water is better. It has to meet higher standards, and has been treated and tested.

know that tap water in some areas tastes nasty though.

Tap water far exceeds the quality standard it has to meet. Bottled water is for stupid people.

I recon it depends how far away from the source you live. For example here in Wales our tap water tastes a LOT different to tap water in a big city. I dare say your not going to die from drinking any tap water in this country but City tap water is going to have a lot more chemicals in it.

In fairness, it depends whether we're talking still or sparkling (ok, if you're talking dispenser, then I assume, still) as I can taste a huge difference between the different types of sparkling water.

Still, I can't tell between Evian, Volvic, tap etc. but I really like San Pellegrino sparkling. Tastes hugely different to Highland Spring, for example, IMO.

Bottled water is still treated, it's not straight from a spring.

Remember the Dasani water controversy when that was found to be contaminated by bromate during it's treatment process.

Someone posted a link up to some website that had carried out tests on the water.

I think tap water from an area around London came out the best?

I was told here in italy the tap water's treated to make it safe to drink, but some of the treatment can make it taste funny. Also, bottled water's easier to keep cool in the fridge. (Of course you can use the old bottle to fill from the tap)

Dasani was just tap water with something added though, vitmins or some such. They never claimed it water spring or mineral water
