You have given your email address to someone/ a website without checking the "dont pass my details to third parties" option.

This website/ person has in turn sold this information to Virgin!

Why would you assume that? It seems far more likely to me that he gave his e-mail address to Virgin himself.

I had a case of wine about a year ago then cancelled my membership. The disclaimer on the bottom is contradictory.
