Stocking a Supermarket

Interesting yes, but does`nt tell half of the story and I only say this as a planner for one of Asda`s competitors, I compile warehouse and transport plans basically. 1.5 million units a week? The peak plan for the company I plan distribution for, will be 1 million units in one 24 hour period. 900 inbound loads a day sounds right even though it does sound unbelievable. Some big stores receive 2 loads an hour every hour round the clock at Christmas and things get rather interesting all round. The way the stock is picked is very clever though although some sites are reverting to machines doing it.

Interesting, but can you imagine what it would have been like without the forklift-truck? Casting my mind back to the 60's/70's in the old Covent-Garden, with hundreds, nay thousands, running around with sack-barrows. 'Tis how I imagine it would be, only worse. Thank heaven for modern mechanics, otherwise we would all be starving.

Or a bit less chubby.

That is a fine example of how a simple system of supply and demand can evolve into a monster of epic proportions that ultimately relies on computing power. Very simple but massively clever. IMO anyway.

I must concur with my dear friend as I sit next to him. When I worked at Asda, in the couple of weeks in the run up to Christmas we had about 4 chilled/freezer trailers in the yard to keep the extra stock in, as the backup chillers/freezers were just not big enough to cope with the extra stock. Things like cream used to come in a couple of trays a day, at Christmas it was coming in by the pallet full.
Yeah iv noticed it alot quiter and last year i worked in a much quiter shop that usually made 90,000 a week takins! Which in comparison to the tesco I work in now, same building, takes more than that a day. But its been dead this year.
And i dont know how we work our depots but its pish. we got a delivery of 43 cages of frozen our freezers hold under 30. andthe drivers cant take stuff back.
