New Mobile Phone

Afternoon all

Now I know there have been a few threads on this recently, but due to the wonders of the "search" facility I cannot find any within the last six months, went through the last 45 pages and still cannot see anything.

So, due a mobile upgrade this week and would be grateful for any advice any fellow phers can supply.

I like the iPhone, but it looks very large, plus the inability to forward texts or receive picture texts is not great. Also like blackberry’s but the cameras seem to be mince.

Any phones I should be looking at? I had an N95 and liked it when it wasn’t locking up all the time. Saw an advert for a N97 but can’t find any information.

If you like mobile phones and want a gadget laden geek fest with 27 million obscure and useless functions that no other phone has don't buy a iPhone

If you dislike mobile phones and want something simple and pretty idiot proof buy an iPhone.

I've had a couple of Windows Mobile phones, given up on them and gone back to a trusty old SE K800i.

I then got an iPhone and my SE hasn't been powered up since.

+2 for the iPhone. It may not be able to do some of the basics like forwarding txts but it's simply the best device i've ever used. Go and have a play instore, it should change your mind.

Why does it have to be so difficult? I'm overdue an upgrade and had convinced myself that as I should be able to receive email on the hoof a Blackberry was the way to go, as they have been around a bit and should have had all of the bugs ironed out by now. Apparently not from what you are saying

The Storm is fundamentally flawed IMO. No WI-Fi and that stupid clicky screen is god-awful for text input as you can't build up a rhythm. Entering a character needs two separate actions 1) select the character with the touch screen 2) physically depress the screen to enter it.

iPhones do push email.

Got a SE C905 - on the plus side wireless, GPS, good camera, easy to use. On the downside can drink up battery power and is slighly heavy / bulky comapred to my previous SE 910i.

That's complete rubbish and so is Mr Fry's report. I like Mr Fry but on this case I would completely disagree with most things he has said in the article.

I'm guessing from what you have wrote you have never used a Storm because if you had used a storm you would realize you do not need two clicks, you need to press the screen once to make it complete an action but you can touch the screen to highlight a key so there is certainly no need for two touches. Both the Iphone and Storm are fairly rubbish for typing but the Storm is the less awful in my opinion.

The click screen is way better than any other touch screen out there.

Fundamentally flawed? Eh? So any phone without wifi is useless? I think they should have included it but for most it's not an issue with 3G.

The only phone to compare the storm to is really the Iphone and they both have their pro's and con's. The Iphone has the app centre and the best media function of any phone. The storm has a much better camera, email and business function like being able to edit documents read open more attachments and the like. They are different and based on your needs either could be most suitable.

As for crashes, don't worry folks they aren't widespread and have typically being caused by adding 3rd party applications.

Was chatting to a chap from Vodafone on Fri about BB Storm.

Software update just released apparently sorts the speed / reliability etc.

New "revised" model landing in Feb 09 with WiFi...

Have looked at both BB storm and Iphone for a month or so, bought an Iphone on Friday.

Having looked at the BB storm, one thing that worried me from several that i looked at was longevity/reliability. It does not , in the main, appear to be built well. Certainly feels worse than the IP. Also, having looked at the firmware updates ( yes the latest one) that have gone on in the US of A, not all of the faults have been fixed in the BB, but there has been an improvement for many.

The two biggest concerns for alot of folks with the iphone would not bother me; the camera and picture texting. Never use either function. Copy and paste would be nice, i am sure it will come along.

Iphone really is good though for all the other multimedia stuff and Apps. Really liking it alot, integration into Itunes is a doddle, all my contacts synced with address book etc. Very little not to like really.

If you're used to the N95 then maybe have a look at an N96, it's natural successor.

Of course it has it's faults, but the latest firmware (v12.summat) has made a great improvement. Like the N95, it'll take a little while to find it's feet. Great camera, and pretty much every function you'll ever need.

I have a 3G iPhone, I love it.

It's got all of these features that I thought would be absolutely stupid, and now I find myself using it constantly. It's quite the useful little gadget, and it's also quite good at taking pictures of Rolls Royce Phantoms driving in the middle of a snowstorm.

Which means it looks vaguely pretty whilst refusing to do what you want it to do.

A lot of people obviously like Windows Mobile and whilst I prefer other phone OS's it's still does the job well.

For instance the Sony Xperia X1 is being widely proclaimed as being the best phone of the moment for it's functionality and package.
