I have a decent pair of black leather shoes which I want to give a real shine too. There does`nt seem to be a traditional shoe shine in Nottingham so will do it myself. Have any of you any tips or secrets you could share to assist me in my quest?

I`ve done all the usual searches on Google and on here but wanted to ask about any tips some of you may have that I have not discovered.

Spit, polish and elbow grease - that's it. It works.

Use Kiwi, not Cherry Blossom or any of that other stuff. Don't buy 'Parade Gloss'. Just bog standard black Kiwi polish, some dusters and a brush.

Does the term "spit and polish" mean anything to you.

I don't have a butler but I'll see if I can contact my old batman.

Thats no different to what I already do - perhaps it is the best way but am curious to see what people come up with.

I was told that you can't buy elbow grease seeing as Woolworths is now closed down. frown

Sorry for the sarcastic reply earlier.

I seem to remember a reversed teaspoon was used on the toe cap to burnish the leather and improve the gloss

I understand from ex-forces people, that a final polish with newspaper works well. Something to do with the ink and so on.

ok.......

What sort of gloss do you want?

Just average shiney or 'parade standard'?

If it's the latter, be prepared to spit and polish for hours on end to get them to the sort of standard mine are. Apply a small amount of polish on the COTTON duster, then spit onto the surface and make small circular motions with a light pressure. Repeat this for several hours until you have a smooth finish that is starting to gloss. You will end up with a smooth glossy finish that can also be enhanced by running under a cold tap and gently rubbing with wet cotton wool to finish off without any scratches or smears.

When I used to do parades for the Queen at Windsor and Horseguards I even used to 'bull' in between the tread on the soul in case I passed out and was 'feet up' hehe

Forgot to mention the cotton wool bit in my original post - essential for mirror finish...

You can cheat by getting a load of polish on by spreading it all over the toe cap/shoe, then heat a spoon in a flame and by using the back of the hot spoon to smooth out the polish....it gets the 'base coat' on, so to speak.......however I don't really use that method as the polish tends to by brittle and flake off as soon as you put the shoe or boot on. The spit polish method makes it less likely to flake.
