HD on conventional TV?

Possibly a dumb question. Can you use an HD source with a conventional (top quality) telly or do you have to have an lcd/plasma jobby.

I like my conventional telly - it fills a space in the living room very nicely (and at 70kg would be a pain for anyone to steal). It also seems to have a better picture than most of the flat screen TVs I've seen (with non-HD source).

Yes it will work, it must do or PS3's wouldn't work on crts.

No you can't. For a start it won't have the required connections.

Most of the HD sources I've come across all have scart leads as well as HDMI - you simply use the scart to get low-def pictures. (Sky HD certainly has this - and it can transmit on RF out too for a simple analogue signal).

Assuming it had SD output (not all HD sources would, a standalone bluray player might not, for example) you would be able to watch it, but it wouldn't be HD. Your source would downscale it if you don't use a HD connection like HDMI.

It would also be completely pointless.

My xbox (with XBMC) outputs 720p to my LCD TV over component connections, so I don't see why not. I don't know if a good quality CRT will do any more lines per frame than PAL requires though ?

Sounds like it's not worth the money or effort.

I can get a pretty good picture from a laptop output (via s video connection?) which must be better than basic PAL spec or I wouldn't be able to read it. That, along with thinking of upgrading the Sky box set me thinking.

An SD CRT can only display PAL signals at 50Hz/60Hz - the S-video signal will be PAL , as would a RGB scart input or any other legacy connection to a SD crt

It's a shame television manufacturers have ceased developing CRT technology.

I've just restored a 36 year old Sony colour set and the picture quality, in particular the contrast, is far superior to the LCD set I have. The old set looks high def. in comparison to the new.

This is the thing. My Philips CRT TV has a great picture and I've been less than impressed with the picture on a lot of flat screen TVs I've seen.

While you won't benefit from the 'hidef' picture you definitely will from the improved bitrate of Bluray, if you are the sort of person who notices mpeg artefacts such as colour banding. Certainly, I do Sound (of course) is in a different league to DVD, finally surpassing LaserDisc.

Stuff shot on HD and outputted on normal Freeview/Sky BBC looks extra good on my old CRT.
