Media driven recession?
Discussion
How much do you think the mass media have made this recession worse?,dont get me wrong i know things went a bit pear shaped in america and the oil price rocketed, but is the constant barage of how bad things 'could' be untill 2010 just making people panic and keep what money they have in their pockets.i'm just watching sky news and its a quiet news day so they are focusing on the nations shopping leading up to christmas, you'd swear the world will end unless they match last years takings.
That is of coure a small example of how everything is constantly pessimistic.
Or is it just me not having a proper grip on the financial difficulties of the world?

I think it's a bit of both, things are bad but the media always come out with self-fulfilling prophecies eg if they say that cars/houses etc will be cheaper in 3/6 months time who, except those who are forced to by circumstances, will buy now? So people don't buy and things get worse...In my opinion anyway.....
The recession is real.
The media are right to describe it as such.
The media are totally, utterly wrong however, in their approach to the politicians , giving way too much benefit to the idiots in charge overseeing the train wreck that is the UK economy.
I am staggered that the Gov has not been hounded out and exposed for the corrupt self-serving turds that they are. I can only conclude therefore, that the media and the government are the same thing...

Also works the other way. How many property programmes were on the telly for years showing how Mr & Mrs average could make a killing from 'property development'. Seemingly everyone with a spare tenner was a 'but to let landlord'.The public are fools and the media is just an extension of that.

It's real enough but a lot of people, media included, just can't accept HOW real it is. We have no God given right to affluence and history demonstrates it's only ever really been achieved by conflict. Goodness knows what the next 12 months will bring but it certainly won't be peaceful. I'm not doom-mongering but just trying to be pragmatic. Bail outs will have to stop at some point then it'll be devil take the hindmost. Capitalism is broke and I don't believe it can be fixed. Communism didn't work either and there's beggar all left but anarchy!trickywoo said:

Exactly - the media should hold these thieves responsible, and be calling for an election ASAP.The media are right to describe it as such.

This is too important to wait until 2010.
Sadly, we have become a country of brainwashed morons to care anymore.

Journalists will invent and magnify any story in order to big up their own career. Remember all the BBC idiots getting mega awards/big publicity during the first 2 years of the Iraq conflict? Very handy of them to get such publicity for their own "amazing" books in years to come, all paid for by the UK tax payer and all the return into their own bank accounts. No doubt they'll also get a massive pension, again all paid for by the UK tax payer - those that pay the TV license in the UK.
