Have a look on wikipedia. No one knows exactly why but they think stonehenge was built the way it was to interact with the sun and moon and in turn so they could worship them. As its the winter solstace my guess would be they are celebrating this. Not my cup of tea but certainly not worth stressing about.

We were passing in Sept and refused to pay the silly money they wanted for access to walk around them. Did these people get in free..... We just looked through the fence, took a pic and carried on. They are rocks, yes it was very clever, but until they find where you put the petrol it's a we bit boring.
