I had the misfortune to wander through the centre of Manchester a few weeks ago and still can't work out why the nightlife in this country is so terrible. Do men and women actually communicate with each other thesedays?

It seems that a night out consists of going out in a large single sex group while bellowing and shouting at random objects/people/cars. As the night gets later and more drinks are downed it seems the large groups of males, still without female company resort to mounting each other, having pretend hugs and fondles with each other just for a laugh (yeah sure boys). As their frustration increases, they then resort to approaching couples asking the female "is this guy bothering you" or just walking up to random people claiming they are staring at their girlfriend (who doesn't actually exist).

My other gripe is the rather stupid nightclubs that let staggering drunks in but then refuse another person due to the specification of their jacket/shirt.

Thank god the Wright brothers invented air transport!

More fool you for going out in Manchester, use your flight ticket and pop down here to Leicester, it's a dream & next to no hassle.........

I see what you mean, some of my mates who dont drink think nights out are crap and i dont blame them, if i wasnt on the lagers id not go anywhere near town.

Another gripe is the loud music played in bars, you meet your mates at 8pm, you may not have seen them for a few weeks and want to catch up yet find yourself shouting at each other from 6 inches away.

Dont get me started on establishments so busy you cant even breathe then you pay £3.80 a pint.

Oh, and what is it with people on nights out being so serious? Nobody ever smiles!

I had a Dutch friend come over, lets call him Marc as that is his name, and his girlfriend Femka (very hot) and we went out in my local town (lets call it Newmarket, for that is what its called) and he was amazed at the lack of clothes the girls wear and how young they are.

He thought they were girls of the night!!!

baring in mind this guy has spent a number of years travelling and it quite converse with English language and customs.

I find the Dutch girls a lot more sufistcated like.

LOL. I spent a few years living in Brazil, for a good part in Rio. I could easily get into the top clubs there where the rich and elite of Brazilian society go including a lot of models/actress etc. About 2 weeks after one particular trip, wearing virtually the same outfit I got turned down at several places in Manchester for "sorry mate, you're too casual tonight".

Use your imagination and stop going to crap bars/clubs?

There are loads of great pubs you can chill in and relax in most towns and some brilliant clubs too.

Yes the high prices and crap service. Was in one of those Deansgate places a few years back, ordered a pint and noticed a bogey stuck to the top of the glass (a real big greenie it was). I told the bartender who then started to pour the lager from the dirty glass into a new one. I told her to forget that and I'd have a fresh one! Since then I only drink from a bottle. I think on a busy night their idea of washing a glass is a quick rinse under cold water.

Not everywhere but in a few places. Thats another thing, just because a bar dims the lights and fits brushed aluminium surfaces does not give them the right to charge a fortune for beer!

Thats true. The contrast with nightclubs in Croatia (I know, not exactly a cheap taxi, is it ?)...is astonishing....
Everyone is in such a 'New Years Eve' mood all night, every night, moving and reacting as one group of friends.....
Staff come over to take your drink order (no queueing... wink ) and find you with it 5 minutes later wherever you are, changing your note from a bumbag.... perhaps thats part of the secret.....

Nottingham is also a top place to go, check out the "Pitcher & Piano" - converted church, and the "Qulited Llama" opposite - you get to pick your own beer prices there ..........

I went out on Saturday night, there was more policemen than civilians, who for some reason were giving out condoms with lectures on STDs and flip flops and lectures on broken glass and ankles, plus there is an upside down burnt out vehicle with dont drink and drive on it, talk about try and depress you.

But then all the women were in the same sexy santa outfit and the policemen and riot vans came apparent at 3am when a giant baby and zoro where going at each other, which was surreal cos am sure Zoro should have had a sword.

I went out in my home town with a few lads I've not seen for a year on Saturday and made very similar observations. I love a bloody good drink and I love decent loud music, but I don't need them combined in every bar, and yes there are a few pubs that have quieter music but they all smell a little of wee frown

That's a horrid story, but have been told not to drink from a bottle as the rats piss on the bottles and you'll get Weill's disease hurlhehe

What he said. I've never been to Manchester but I imagine that just like any other city, if you do a bit of research, search down some side streets, you'll find plenty of great places for a night out.
