First night was Sunday night. It's actually a VERY minor Holiday from a religious standpoint, but since it falls near Christmas it's an excuse to give presents to the kids.
Um, its actually one of the key festivals in Judaism, one of a set of three festivals which are considered some of the most important. There are 8 candles that are lit, as well as the one that is raised higher than the other. Each night one more candle is lit but each candle is lit from the central one, effectively the central one gives its flame to the others.
Not read it but I assume the Wiki article explains the details of why, what etc but it is a very important festival in the Jewish calender to both kids and adults and its timing pre-dates Christmas substantially.
