...my son has, today, been offered a place at Oxford University at his first choice College (Worcester). Now he's a clever lad, but I'm 80% certain he wouldn't have got the offer if I hadn't have got him to read the above thread well ahead of his interview. So a big thank you from him to all who gave some very sound advice.

Yep - PH can be worth its weight in gold at times.

Were it not for PH we wouldn't have spent three days in Oxford visiting every single college to see which one he prefers (Tonker emphasised the importance of that).

Cheers Tonk. Wasn't planning on giving him a car - Oxford's a nightmare for cars anyway. I've said I'll get him a cheap crappy bike from someone who's leaving!

Also, we're not planning on letting him live off "Bank of Mum & Dad" - he already works in Tesco at the weekends!

(Can't speak for Maths but my own experience as regards lectures was very much the same as Tonker's (which I suppose isn't surprising as I read Jurisprudence too) - I went to two in my first week and then not again until revision lectures before Finals at the end of my third year! )

In all seriousness, this I can imagine is one of the most rewarding things you could experience as a parent. Hopefully he embraces this opportunity to a better life ( if he wants it )

I don't think he'd be allowed a car at Oxford uni anyway, it's in an agreement which he'll have to sign. I've heard that you can be thrown out if you are found to own a car.

He went to a private school up to the age of 16 and then he went to a state 6th Form College - so half and half really. He's having a gap year from Sept 09 - Aug 10 and will start Uni in September 2010. Interestingly, when he said he wated a gap year, because of the advice given on the original thread, he arranged to teach maths at a school in India (and some other places) which certainly helped in the interview at Oxford last week. Once again, that was due to some sage advice on PH.

And yes, I do feel proud as a parent. Nature seems to design things that you want more for your offspring than you managed to achieve yourself. Darwinism in action in the correct sense I hope - the gene pool improving with generations!
