Have you ever owned a parrot?

When I was first married,my wife sent me out with some money to buy a green sofa she had picked out. When I got there, the sofa was gone, so I popped in to the pet shop next door,and bought a large green Amazon parrot. Since we had no money, that meant no sofa for a while, but it seemed to me that the parrot was the same colour as the sofa,would last a lot longer,, and it has ,too.
They are amazingly smart creatures,quite easy to train, but fairly destructive. He ate the kitchen cupboards by tearing the wood to shreds,and terrified the cats by screaming at them and occasionally biting them. Still, he would sit on my shoulder for hours at a time, an I knew if he twitched that it meant I had two seconds before he dumped on me.
Sadly when I got divorced, the parrot had to go, and I placed him in a home for retired parrots, where he still lives with 40 others. I am thinking of getting a new parrot next year though...maybe a Macaw.
Any other parrot owners on PH?..especially Macaw owners.

A late friend of mine had a parrot, it killed him, I mean the parrot killed him.
Very sad really, for his doctor was treating him for flu, and said he was okay to travel on holiday to Florida. Upon his flight landing in Florida, he was admitted to hospital where he was given 7 days to live, had he arrived at the hospital 7 days earlier, they could have saved him.

I owned a few pairs and between 1995 and 2003 produced 47 chicks over that period. I lost the last hen to a cock bird in 2003 and promised I would never keep another. Still own way to many breeding pairs and keep an umbrela cockatoo in the house as a pet (still own the parents and hand reard `show off` as hes known ) and hes currently away for 2 weeks on holiday at my parents. At one time I keept 8 types of macaw and had great succes with breeding illigers macaws and scarlet macaws, both endangerd species.will posty some pics...
We have a little parrot, a conure, as we didn't think we could cope with a big one.
She is very good, talks a lot, makes a hell of a noise my wife gets the hoover out but is very quite when we are talking to each other!
My Daughter has her in her room about 2/3 evenings flying around and walking over her keyboard whilst she is doing her homework!
Full of character she is - named her Lulu because of the noise she makes

My uncle and aunt owned a parrot. Boy could it talk. The lounge door used to squeak when it was opened or closed and they spent weeks oiling the thing until they realised that each time the door was opened or closed by someone the parrot made a squeaking sound.
Also the parrot would go "jababab jajajbabd jajabab jajabab hmm hmm" and they never understood what it was doing. Then eventually realised that it was mimicking my aunt jabbering away to my uncle and occasionally he would grunt in reply. A truly awesome parrot.
