Hastings To Glasgow Driving on The 31st

I'll be delivering my cousins new car (to him) from Hastings, East Sussex to Glasgow on new years eve. AA route planner reckons i'm looking at 8 hours mostly motorway drivng but i'm hoping someone here can suggest shorter/more interesting route. I need to be in Glasgow early enought to recuperate ready for the party.
Only if you like slowing down every 300 yards for roundabouts!
M6 Toll is possibly the most boring bit of road on the planet, but it doesn't half save you some time.
If you can avoid the traffic, then the M25, M1, M6 M74 is the quickest route. Whilst the A1 and the A66 are more fun to drive on, it adds a good hour onto your journey.

No it doesn't save you time unless the proper M6 has congestion & most of the roundabouts on the A1 have gone.M6 Toll is possibly the most boring bit of road on the planet, but it doesn't half save you some time.

The old A74, now bypassed by the M74. Parts of the old dual carriageway are still there and completely unused.
Not completely unused, def worth a drive as not as busy, but often used as a parallel route by the BIB, so watch out. Still think the A66 is good fun and not too many speed cameras on either. It's going to be a long old run, which i have done many times, and usually towards the end of such drives, all you feel like doing is getting finished asap.IforB said:

Lots of roundabouts now gone from A1... though delays around Stamford for contraflow have been terrible recently....M6 Toll is possibly the most boring bit of road on the planet, but it doesn't half save you some time.

What he said ^^^^^I drive it every second week (not quite hastings but 7 to 8 HRS with two or three 20min max stops.
I can't see traffic being a problem on the 31st. Hardly anyone working and no school traffic. I'd do it like this:
Set off early - 6ish would be about right.
Head up that awful road (A21?) past Tonbridge and onto M25 clockwise
Ease off to about 90 through the variable speed limit stretch (A3 junction through to M40)
Straight up M40 - should be perfectly clear and FAST. Keep your ears open for traffic reports in the Midlands.
Onto M42 Northbound, again watching the gantry cameras.
M6 Northbound, I would be surprised if you don't breeze through Brum at approx 8:30am on New Years Eve - if radio reports otherwise then take M6 Toll. The toll road is nice but I can't see the point when the M6 is free flowing.
Then straight up the M6 / M74
All being well you should be in Glasgow for lunch.
