Having 'popped the question' over christmas it would appear that I now have a wedding to plan. I've never been in this situation before so I don't have the first clue where to start.
Does anyone know where I can get decent pointers from? Website addresses will be a great help.
We were thinking (since Me and my partner are no longer two people we are now officially 'we') of a date in summer 2010 if that makes any difference?
You'll all notice that I've asked for pointers not 'hilarious' comments about how I've wrecked my life or how women are snakes with tits, so keep them off the thread please.
I appreciate that a car website may not be the best place to ask for advice but if someone can point me in a direction where I can get suitable advice I'll gladly f*ck off there and use this for just chatting about cars.
Thanks.

There are a couple of sites out there (WeddingPlanner and Hitched are a couple but its been a long time since I checked) they give advice on the best order to do things.
I found that finding the venues the hardest part, all the really good places get booked up well in advance. Also get the date set, give people plenty of time to sort themselves out and teh band booked.
Ring/dresses etc come further down the list.
Congratulations.

If you;re doing anything out of the ordinary, such as doing it overseas, then talking to a professional can't hurt. We got married in South Africa (as my wife is from there) and we employed an organiser to help. We did most ourselves but she provided lists of things to do, contacts etc. and was there to ensure the smooth running on the day. Cost us about £1000 for her, but seeing as the wedding was many thousands more, it was a worthwhile expense.
I'd love to do it abroad and New York would be great, unfortunately we want family there and my mother will not leave the country, getting her to leave her village is difficult and to leave Linconshire nigh on impossible.
She'd never leave the country, so we're looking local. It means its going to be more expensive but at least we'll have those people around who we care about (and a few hangers on who we don't)

Very easy to price weddings too
Take anything that has a normal price then add a zero to the end and you have the wedding price

You could marry abroad, then have the "traditional" wedding back in the UK.
I had mates who married in Vegas, then had a registry marrige over here. Another set did the beach wedding and then the full church thing over here.
Depends on what you two want to do (ignore the parents etc as they can take over and make it the wedding THEY want).

Many congrats Darren. Fortunately for you the bride normally does all the organising; the bloke just says 'Whatever'!
I've never planned a whole wedding but I've certainly planned the photography side of many, as that's what I do... certainly happy to travel to Lincs if you like my work.
Good luck with everything.

Thanks, we have a date in mind, my Grandparents were married on 21st august and my parents did the same around 45 years later. We'd like to do the same. As for venue, we have a couple shortlisted already.
Thanks for the advice I'll check those sites.

Wanting to get married on that date is really sweet

Venue on that date might be easier than usual as it is a Friday this year, but still Friday's are a popular day to get married.
If you want a Church & then Reception Venue, that can be awkward often one or the other is booked, as can organising the Registrar to be available if you just choose one venue for it all. The Registrar has to come from the District the Venue is in...
You can set a budget and stick to it, but if can get out of hand as well. You can make it cheaper if you do a lot of the work yourselves... Just little things, doing your own invites, table names etc - that makes it more personalised as well

Look at the corkage charges at the venue of your choice, and then the cost of wine/champers etc from them, see the difference and if it is cheaper for you to buy your wine/champers in bulk elsewhere...

There's a next time? I get the feeling I may have the fill of this after the one time! I don't plan to do it again.thanks for all the advice everyone ... I feel my pay packet may get a battering and my name may be appearing in the overtime book more often than it does now.
A bloke?
Organising his wedding?
That is the job of your OH, and your MIL.
Your only duty is to choose the least embarrasing mate to be best man, avoid getting herpes off the stag weekend hooker, and turn up on the day, and then get ignored whilst everyone gushes over the bride all night.

Just let your future wife and her mother sort everything whilst pretending to be interested.
Sum total of your organisation is remembering to turn up on the day.

Brilliant, that will do for me! Organising his wedding?

I got married in Vegas, all I had to do in terms of organising was choosing the date, music for the ceromony and flowers. Very little stress, and the ceremony was broadcast on the internet so those who couldn't make it still got to see it.
Far cheaper than a "traditional" wedding, and the weather was nicer also!
