if you are flying - you can get excess freight pre-shipped via cargo at much lower rates than excess baggage : you will need to take to the airport separately prior to your departure, ask your airline what the cost £ / kilo is.
the other option is conventional seafreight - for example I needed to ship about 20kg from Africa to the UK : DHL quote was around $250+ , local post office was $30 - it arrived safely in 2 weeks via sea.

Just a quick update for those who are thinking of doing the same. Flew with TAM Airlines in the end (lots cheaper) and just told then I was "media" and the things I had packed were fragile. I was hugely overweight and oversized but for some reason I (can only put down to much flirting) wasn't charged excess. Flew via Sao Paulo with no problems and everything got there in one piece. Result, just too hot here at the moment...
