With the meltdown in retailers gathering pace and goods being sold at giveaway prices, will the public go back to paying the ripoff prices they have conplained about for years?
With Sterling so weak, and the excessive costs placed on retailers by land prices and government red tape, we won't have a choice...drfrank said:
Try Ireland for rip-off !!
The UK has nothing on it
Very true. The UK has nothing on it
I don't know where rip off Britain comes from. It is same living costs in France, Germany. Is a lot more expensive in quite a few European countries.
I know a few people who have businesses based in the UK, as best place for tax on smaller businesses. Yet they live in Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium.
If rent and rates were lowered then I could lower my prices, before the recession my net profit was 6% not much leeway to lower prices there.
The major problem in Britain is that the British want excellent service in a plush environment but only want to pay the cost price of the goods.

People will pay what they have to pay to get what they want. They aren't going to tell retailers to drop their prices. it doesn't work like that.voyds9 said:

Very true, unless its big ticket "designer brand" stuff, most any retail shops in the rest of the world (give or take a few exceptions) are not much more that warehouses with shelves rather than swanky retail outlets that the UK has. voyds9 said:

I think there is a lot of truth in that.Equally however, I think a lot of suppliers want to charge prices that should command excellent service whilst offering poor to average service at best.

Not while Tesco's are still around
Competition is what keeps prices down. We're gong to approach a situation where competition is very limited. You think your friendly tescos will bend over backwards for you then?Albert Bridge said:
I'm really not surprised Zavvi has gone under. What sort of noodnink would pay £14 for a Cd that you can get for £8.99 online?
And by the same token, what noodnink would pay £75.00 online for something they could buy over the counter for £34.75?Well it does happen, believe me.
