TV adverts - Why I ask you????

Please someone tell me why the adverts on TV have to be so much louder than the programmes!!!???
And why are there so many sofa sales??!!
And why do the programming people schedule loads of films all on at around the same time??!
OK and now I can breathe...

I remember this was reported a while ago, but at the time couldn't say that I had actually noticed, but recently yes the adverts have become so much louder to the point where I am having to adjust the volume during the adverts and then back again during the programme. Its really doesn't endear you to wanting to buy from the advertisers.

I am considering inventing a gadget that mutes the ads when they come on so I don't have to!

I am considering inventing a gadget that mutes the ads when they come on so I don't have to!

If only I could reprogram the missus to talk all the way through the adverts instead of the f*cking program.

They are unbelievable!

Sometimes the difference is just stupid. It seems worse on some channels than others, such as Paramount Comedy and ITV.

I do Fast Forward through most of them, just gives you a shock when they come on.

I'm pretty sure that its illegal for the advert volume to be louder that the adjacent programme. Report them to OFCOM!

The adverts aren't 'louder' in the sense that they're peaking higher than the programme - its that they're heavily compressed to use a smaller dynamic range, hence they 'sound' louder.

None of the commercial broadcasters want to do anything about it. I don't blame them - you don't bite the hand that feeds you, and technical standards on all channels have dropped significantly over the years.

I'm not sure which I dislike more, the louder adverts thing, or BBC letting seven notes of the Doctor Who credits play, before compressing the screen and going "BLAH BLAH BLAH, Lark Snore to Candleyawn, NEXT BLAH BLAH." all over the top of it.
