night storage heaters

Our house has economy 7 night storage heaters. (yes, I know they are a pain). One has recently stopped working. . The thermal link hadn't tripped. It worked for a couple of days when we changed the the accelerator resistor, but then stopped again. It's an old dimplex (XL range, not asbestos bricks). Are these units easily repaired, or have things "moved on" in night storage heaters? If so what should I be looking for? How much is fitting likely to be?
I've often wondered if the extra charged on daytime electricity means that something like an oil filled electric heater would be a cheaper way to heat the house, Am I way off?

When i bought my first flat i had to have 3 new ones, a small, a mediumm and a large, luckily my uncle works for the council and got me them for £250, he said they are normally about £800-£1000 i wired them in myself. I consider myself to be fit and it nearly killed me carrying the bricks for them up 3 flights of stairs!!!!
Not sure about that. Ones similar to those we have at uni are only £206 plus vat online, and they look pretty much identical to the ones we have at home.
My father in law offered to wire them in, but I wasn't sure if fitting a night storage heater fell within the work that doesn't require notification, and therefore doesn't require an electrician.
