It is for a good cause, as lots of healthy animals are PTS for no other reason than being breed by greedy owners or ditched on the street because the owners cannot cope with a certain breed of dog,
Can you all sign the petition to extend the 7 days poundies currently get to 28 days.

Out of interest, what would they hope to achieve through this extension other than extending an animal's life for 21 days?
The part of the petition that seems important to me is that "documentation should be provided and be available to the public to prove that ALL methods of contacting the rightful owner have been used before an animal is PTS", rather than an arbitrary increase in time.
As for the example they cite of the dog whose owners were on holiday, surely the issue there is who was looking after the dog at the time, and what did they not do that the owners could have done?

Surely that will significantly increase the cost of running shelters and put some out of business?
Anyone who signs that petition in all fairness must sign a DD at the same time for £10 a month to a dogs home.

I have to say, this is my immediate thought as well. How are people supposed to do this, without extra funding? While I applaud your actions to a certain extent, I think further thought is needed first.........
I am a volunteer foster carer for a dog rescue in south Wales, where there is a problem with strays and puppy farming. A lot of dogs end up in the council pound, where they are put to sleep if not reclaimed after 7 days. That's where we step in - we take them in where we can when their 7 days are up. We have nine dogs in there today hoping that we can find a space for them. Other rescues also help us out if they have the space. I am well aware of what goes on in the pounds. I'm not sure I would want to see the dogs having to spend further time than necessary in there. Some of them are not nice places..... Also, the pounds would become more overcrowded than they are now. Illness goes un-noticed, kennel cough is rife. Squabbles among the dogs can break out. Space is finite - as presumably are the costs. Stray dogs are paid for from the Council Tax. Presumably this would need to increase to cover the increase in costs.
I would far rather people were educated to neuter their dogs, train them, socialise them and look after them better. Also that people stopped funding backyard breeders and puppy farms.

Without apparing to sound like a pompous arse, I've had a DD set up to suport the Dogs Trust Used to be the Canine Defence League)for a few years now. Anyone who signs that petition in all fairness must sign a DD at the same time for £10 a month to a dogs home.

I very nearly passed a cheeky comment on her impressive chesticles when she first mentioned 'DD', but I bit my tongue and merely slobbered from a discrete distance.
Stray dogs do not go to a nice shelter - they go to the council funded pound. I would not want to see any dog having their stay increased from 7 to 28 days in many of the pounds. That is a further 3 weeks they will have to wait before being taken into a rescue / foster home and then rehomed.

Well done.
Instead of subscribing to a dog charity I took a rescue dof from them istesd of buying a puppy. I did have to pay a substantial adoption fee of course so a double benefit for the doggy charity. One less dog to feed/house and a nice juicy donation.
A good sentiment but mis-placed I feel.
Having been to many a rescue centre where dogs are kept in relatively decent condtions but for one reason or another nobody will adopt them, rather than having them PTS the centre will stubbornly keep them locked up, is it really fair to the animal. Sometimes PTS is the kindest option.
