Mine is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - has been sat on shelf for three years now and only first few pages read.

Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring) - I have tried to read this a few times but just can't get into it. I am an avid reader and there are very few books I haven't finished - the only other one I can think of is one of the Bourne series - just too involved a plot I'm afraid.

The Hobbit. Got to page 112 (still remember that part) 7 years ago. I just couldn't carry on, it was so unbelievably dull.

I read a lot, and Tolkien is just horrendous to read, i'm sure it's just a product of time and endless variants but Tolkien's writing style and use of language is awful.

Tolkein is quite easy to read, The Silmarilion is a little more difficult and the Lays of Beleriand is a real bugger, but LOTR is straightforwards.

With you there. I managed to get through whole LOTR lot but didn't have a feckin clue what was going on.

I also have the Bourne trilogy gathering dust after trying several times to get into it. Maybe I'm a tad dim or summfink??

I didn't say it was difficult, I just said it was awful

The Iliad (One big paragraph) and Paradise Lost. Tried many times and they both send off to sleep. I'm just not as cultured as I'd like to be I guess.

Agreed. Made it a third in.

I still haven't managed to read a Dickens book to the end. Made it 3/4 of the way through Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. I love Dickens's prose, but his books go on for ever, and I forget what's happening.

The Woodlanders, by Thomas Hardy. Started reading it for my English O Level, couldnt finish it, hated it, tried many times in the last 20 years to read it but just cannot stand it. Somehow managed an A in my exam though.
