Where does Electricity go?

Hmmm i feel i may be missing something here.....

If i leave my phone charger (for example) plugged in over night and turned on at the switch but not plugged into my phone, it still uses electricity, but what does it do with this electricity? Where does it go?

I'm presuming it doesn't just fall out of the end, otherwise when i got out of bed i'd be knee deep in the stuff.....

So what happens to it???

yep, the electric current flowing through the primary windings will generate a small amount of heat (and noise) but not much as there shouldn't be much resistance/impedance in the windings.

Exactly... All this bo11ocks about turning stuff off that's left on standby, that "wasted" energy is still heating your home, which for 90% of the time is a good thing...

ok .. as my cousin (12 and a bit) asked me this over xmas.
240v from the mains causes a current to pass through the transformer in your charger, the 'bit' of energy that gets left over goes back to the electricity grid; as your phone isn't plugged in, the only bit of work the transformer does is to heat the primary coil / transformer core.
