Which AV reciever.....

Morning all,

Which of the following AV recivers would you choose?

Sony STRK880
Yamaha RXV361
Yamaha RXV363

All to be connect ed to t Sony BDPS350 Blu Ray player, an Xbox 360, Humax PVR and a set of speakers yet to be decided upon.

Got the same dilema, thinking the Yam 361 on price and performace (cheaper in store BTW) or the Yam 363 as it looks nicer in black! !

Yeah you see I prefer the 363 in silver, but the Sony blue ray is black, but then again neither will match the white xbox!

Got a Richer Sounds that is very local so will be calling in store anyway and they will match webprices so all in all pretty good.

What is the performace / spec difference between the 363 / 361?

I bought the RXV361 last year and have been very pleased with it - it replaced a Creative Labs computer surround sound thing which i had hooked up to the TV and there is a huge difference.

I admit i'm not an audiophile and cant really notice any difference between low end and high end hi-fi stuff so this receiver was perfect for me and sounds excellent.

Also bought the Yamaha NSP110 speaker package as it was quite cheap and gave me all the speakers i needed to get set up but also allowing me to change individual speakers to better ones later if needed, although so far these speakers have been excellent too.

I think the 363 has an HDMI connector, but not required as your tv has it. Not sure there is too much in it tbh.

I heard the 361 can be had for £99 in store, so this is proabbly the way I'll go. Shame, as I already have a "spare" Sherwood AV amp, whilst it is prologic, it sounds great, (real rich) but does not have optical input so cannot really use with HDMI and PS3. Was thinking of going componet cable to get phono inputs and keep his res so I can use it still.....?

I have a silver xbox facia.. AV toys do need to be the same colour IMO!

hmm well, i went to richer sounds - who didn't have any of the blu ray players left,

the yamaha 361 they had was a reconditioned unit and i didn't fancy that....

back to the drawing board for the time being....

altho i did notice that digitaldirect have the dvd player and the amp in, just not sure on which speakers.....

Make sure you get one that supports DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD as otherwise your Blu Ray movies will only come out in stereo. Blu ray movies al use the new HD audio option too.

Don't want to waste money on that.

I run a PS3 into a Yamaha RXV357(older model) it does not have hdmi or support the new systems so when I watch Blu Ray its stereo but play games/watch DVD's its in full 5.1

hmmm if this is the case can anyone reccomend one that does as from this spec it doesn't look like the Yamaha does?

And can someone explain what i would be missin gout on? woudl bluray not play in surround sound?

So how are these wired up? Does both the audio and video plug into the AV receiver and only that gets plugged into the TV? Or is it the audio goes into the AV receiver and the video goes straight into the TV?

This does 7.1 and has three HDMI inputs.

That Onkyo Receiver does nor decode DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD, so it's not really an HD audio receiver

You people have all missed out on the Sony DG820, it has 4 HDMI inputs, 7.1 out, and decodes all the latest TrueHD etc. audio. Although they sell out very quickly as they are quite popular at the mo, I tried to go and buy one yesterday but there only seemed to be one left and it was open box, so i'm waiting for richer sounds to get more in. The onkyo 606 is a little better however the sony is newer and has more features imho.

It is a better option even though it is £50-£60 more. TrueHD/DTS-HD is a recent addition to the Blu-Ray Audio specification and only applies to those players with HDMI 1.3 connections.

True but that still is most of the players that are sold now + the PS3.

Depends Most AV Amps have SCART's so connect the player to the Amp and SCART out on the amp to TV. The sound is usually carried by a digital cable out from the player to the Amp as SCART is only wired for analogue signals.
