Who in the UK likes the English?

I was going to post this in the South Wales forum, but as its a topic for the rest of the UK P&P it is.
Was recently in Wales to pick a car up (
) and drove down via Birmingham and down through the Beacons. OH and I stopped for a break a couple of times and we both noticed the smiles disappear as soon as we opened our mouths (both southern accents, Cambridge and Herts).
We also felt it in Cardiff, if anything it was worse. This one time a guy was just plain rude, and all I asked was where I could buy some LPG. "How would I bloody know that, eh" he said "Er, you work in a petrol station?" I replied
I talked to some English at the hotel and they also noticed it.
I like the Welsh. I have friends in Llanelli and they are great and I would do anything for their kids, in fact I have. I like the Scots and have Scottish friends and half my family are Irish.
I know there is a love hate thing with the Scots and that's fine, but I always thought the Welsh liked the English but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Am I wrong, do the Welsh really dislike the English that much? Do they just not like me! That would be fine.

We go over there rallying fairly regularly and I've noticed it.
One time 5 or 6 of us went into a pub and all the feckers starting speaking welsh (or coughing up phlegm it's hard to be sure) as soon as they realised we were English. We then couldn't get served at the bar as every other bugger in the place bought at least one drink before us and as we turned to walk out the barman finally asked what we wanted. I forget the exact reply from one of our group but it probably didn't help Anglo/Taff relations.
Generally though as soon as they find out you're rallying there they are fine and are happy to talk cars and help you out, plus most of the Welsh rallying folk are great. So it's not all bad!

Well, speaking as someone whose family owned a holiday cottage near Harlech for many years, I have never found the Welsh to be unpleasant towards the English. As a rule, if they are able to speak Welsh, they generally do, rather than speaking English and then swapping to Welsh to annoy you! As I have family in Swansea and because we owned the cottage, I picked up a bit of Welsh, enough to get the gist of what's said and occassionally answer, which was guaranteed to surprise a few people!
As I say, I've always found the Welsh very polite. Even when they burned down our cottage they were very pleasant about it!
As for the Scots, well they are OK (except my BiL who is a complete nightmare) as long as you remember being depressed and nostalgic about a past they never had is a national pass time and you stay well clear of their fish and chip shops!

I like the Scottish - never had any issues being English up there, and had some great sing songs in teh local pubs with a crate load of beers and a guitar.
Definitely going back next year.
I do however dislike the English - dour, miserale and rude to the point of ignorance in the main.
Which is funny, as that is probably a good description of me too
