stove top espresso pot
Discussion
Following on from the coffeeheads, what expresso machine, I got hold of a stove top pot to go with my expresso machine..
Initial experimentation seems to be going ok, but I wondered if the more experienced stove top fans had any advice on the perfect cup..
also is it possible to get a decent creama from a stove top machine
Cheers

When I first got my stove top I bought some Guatamala Elephant stuff from Whittards...being useless I managed to hit 10 on the Caffeine Scale and stay awake all night...a 6shot latteInitial experimentation seems to be going ok, but I wondered if the more experienced stove top fans had any advice on the perfect cup..

Don't Italians swear by them? Especially when you forget it has come of the stove and put it on the work surface/plastic mat/ hand etc.
You won't get much crema from a stovepot as it doesn't operate at a high enough pressure to force it out of the beans. If you lift the lid as it's filling you'll see the crema develop a little, but in most stovepots when you pour it'll just stick to the sides rather than transfer to the cup. Best way to get it is to spoon what little there is out after it's finished but before you pour.
Or you could do the old cheat of pouring a little coffee onto some sugar and then beating it until it turns to a froth, and pretending that's crema, although it will sweeten your drink - it's not unpleasant but a lot of effort and at the end of the day it's still not real crema.

Don't pack the grounds down too much as the steam will have to work harder to penetrate.
Make sure it's tightly screwed together.
Don't lift the lid halfway through to see what's going on or you'll be hit in the eye with hot coffee and temporarily blinded, you'll then have to make an offering of a pair of imitation 18c gold spectacles to the statue of a saint in a mountaintop shrine in Sicily before your sight returns.

If you don't know what he is talking about, you probably won't be able to offer much advice
Everyone calls them stove top espresso makers, but they dont really make espresso, just strong coffee. Bare in mind these were invented after proper espresso machines, and are only a staple of the italian household because they are so cheap... you'd never see them being used in bars where the proper stuff is served
I find it very hard to get a decent brew out of them, I'll stick to my espresso machine or cafetiere thank you

have one of these (some itallian jobbie) for standby on the odd occasion that i run out of beans of the machine is in for servicing.
Mind you, i don't do moo juice so only drink black coffee / espresso.
My daily grinder is a Jura F70 machine running on Papua New Guinnea double roast beans.
i am thinging of installing an HKS turbo and variable cams
