A bit of fun... Which side of the French/Italian border?

I've always had this fantasy that one day I'll live somewhere on the coast between Cannes and San Remo. It's a long way off, if indeed it ever happens, but for the purpose of further pondering I was wondering whether it would be better to be living on the Italian side or the French side. Would there be a noticeable difference in life-affecting stuff like taxation, legislation and other legal elements, depending which side of the border one resided on? Is there a better side of the border to live on (mindful that you're always able to hop over to the other side when needs be) or would it pan-out pretty-much the same either way?
