If the aim is to remove the fat wouldn't it be better with higher activity exercise to burn off the fat covering the abs?

It's true that localised weight loss is a myth, if you have a spare tyre doing sit-ups will do absolutely no good as the fat will still be there covering the abdominals no matter how well-developed they are.

It's the same reason why you do a smaller number of reps to build biceps rather than lifting a pencil 500 times a day. And yes, CV work is the way forward. (No, I don't mean list your career history.)

For some reason i have always had a six pack without doing much and keep saying im going to start working out to make it more defined etc but never get around to it. Might start doing in the new year. Agree that 100 sit ups a day done really fast are pointless. I read that 4 x 15-20 slow ones would be much more beneficial (hold for two seconds at the top)

Do the CV work, then begin the ab training.

As said, train them the same as you would any other bodypart, work them into your weekly split.

That being said, they can take a lot more abuse than other bodyparts.

Shape is a genetic thing, some people have wonky abs, others perfectly straight, some 8, some 6, some just 4.

Size seems down to genetics too, I have very deep cuts in mine, and I can have abs visible even at the end of a bulk which could be nearing 20% bf.

And I wouldnt recommend anyone to do just 3 sets on a bodypart either, cant see you getting much stimulation from that.

Big power movements, squats, deadlifts, standing overhead work will give you a solid core, then weighted crunches to really batter it.

Make sure your working your whole body too, some people seem to do just cardio and ab work aiming for a 6 pack, most wont get it, and if they do, will look out of proportion, having a small back, chest etc.

You need two things:

1) Low BF
2) Muscles in the abs

To get a low body fat, obviously do cardio, exercise, eat right.

To get muscles in the abs, train every other day (some people train them daily, claiming they heal quicker. I don't know if that's true or not). Do weighted crunches, situps, kneeups, leg raises, squats, and so on. It BURNS when done right - though when starting out after a period of inactivity it can be hard - but it's a good pain.

For me, most of my BF accumulates in the belly area, so it takes a lot of cardio to get lean enough to see anything.

Yeah it's always funny... You can spot someone who ignores all the trainers and old hands in the gym. They spend three months doing bicep curls and crunches = sticky out belly and funny shaped arms hehe

Also, the quickest way I got a six-pack was when I was doing loads of compound work in the gym, and playing rugby at the weekends.

Even the copious amounts of lager and curry couldn't hide it hehe

If you don't know - compounds are exercises like deadlift, squat, cleans, standing overhead press etc.

I'm ignoring all that now, as I'm training this year for endurance and fitness. High repetition bodyweight exercises and lots of cardio. Should strip the fat but I'm not arsed about guns and six packs nowadays!

Better work on spelling it first... Just copy it out of an old issue of razzle. I'm sure you'll have one to hand wink

Loose the weight first. Then work on the abs.

Although doing things like deadlifts will build them with everything else.

I wouldn't bother with things just on stomach muscles, which essentially are just for show, do something that hits them at the same time as something else.

Hands are full - never seen the point in abs - be happy with the body you have and work on the important stuff - doing the whole american psycho thing never appealed to me...

Yes its always the ones with vests and sparrow legs who stand curling in the fking squat rack! looking in the mirror posing.

I deadlifted the other week in front of a pair, and was looked at as if i`d just strolled into his house and pissed on his children frown

Group of asian lads at my gym that are like that, chiselled and toned up top, not bad arms. Legs like a small girl, never touched a barbell in his life.
