Can't even give the sodding banks your money..
Discussion
I had a fair amount of money with Icesave. We all know how that went and once I got it back I needed somewhere slightly safer than under my mattress.
Bank Of Scotland were offering a very good fixed rate that allowed withdrawals so I duly opened an account and was surprised that you could open an account on a Sunday, be given your account number there and then, and then phone my regular bank to transfer money instantly ("Faster Payments") to the new account, which I did.
Then came the fun.
I guess it's awkward discussing bank threads without mentioning numbers, but let's just say it's not a small amount - so just how f
king difficult can it be, in a "credit crunch" and "banking crisis" to give a bank a pile of money?!?
The first "Faster Payment" didn't work and admittedly I couldn't be arsed to find out why for the sake of three days interest so I made one payment using the "old" system, which is called BACS but should be called SSP "s
t Slow Payments" as, in 2009, it still takes three days to move money (electronically mind, no pieces of paper involved) between banks.
I've just tried to make another "Faster Payment" for the same amount to be told once again that Bank Of Scotland aren't accepting it, upon calling Bank Of Scotland there appears to be some "technical error" with my account that needs fixing - despite me wanting to give them money they're not at all able to give me any indication what the problem actually is or when it will be fixed, only that the computer says no, so once again I'm stuck doing a regular transfer, which it seems also has a ceiling because I might be a money launderer/secret drug lord.
Assuming you have a sizable chunk of cash and want decent returns, 100% safety, and access should you need it, is there any option other than to grin and bear the nightmare of getting the money in the account and then just pray you never need to speak to or deal with them again?
Right now, if this is the best banks can offer customers in 2009 I think one or two actually deserve to fail as it might offer some incentive to the others to provide a service.

I put you there.
You will never be able to move money again.
Hope it helps.

Fast payment only seems to work for small amounts.
I have tried several times between banks who both have fast payment and are even in the same group and both accounts are in my name.
It seems to be fast out of your account but slow in.
funny old world.
Depends what "small" is I guess?I have tried several times between banks who both have fast payment and are even in the same group and both accounts are in my name.

I wouldn't mind if they actually said "Sorry there's a limit of £x" it's the fact the bank employees don't appear to have any clue beyond what the screen tells them.
This 3 day transfer thing is actually complete b
ks.
There is no such requirement for the transfer of funds between accounts to take any longer than a few minutes, and certainly no longer than 24 hours. Think of all the lovely interest they get to keep in that 3 day window though, across all the transfers made by their customers.
I hate banks with a passion. I really don't understand why some entrepreneur doesn't open one that just has sensible policies and fees, and actually does what they promise.
We've actually got a new 'business banking manager' - Last one was there for a fortnight
We've had perhaps seven or eight of these faceless morons in the last two years. They honestly couldn't tie their own shoelaces up if you drew them a diagram and gave them colour coded laces.
One refused to tell me our current balance over the phone. I complained to the Ombudsman. She left.
I get better service from the indian call-centre, who despite some language difficulties, do actually make an effort to sort the problem out. Funny isn't it? Someone 2000 miles away cares more about my money than some cashier with a badge and a business card 4 miles away.
It pisses me off, could you tell?
