A banker once told me it's impossible to stop a repeat authority on a credit card, as you would stop a direct debit to your bank account.
He said that, even if you cancel your credit card, the person claiming from you can still chase you for it.
No idea if this is true, though...
Yeah but if they're in the wrong in the first place then i doubt they will go chasing you upHe said that, even if you cancel your credit card, the person claiming from you can still chase you for it.

The main question was, if you cancel your card and all they have is your card number (not sort code or account), will that stop any payments? Or is there some way they can still get the money, cant see how to be honest though.
They may not be able to get the money, but surely whether they can legally chase you for payment will depend upon the terms & conditions you agreed to when you signed up?Does the website in question belong to a UK company or one elsewhere in the world?
But why not just contact the company and tell them to cancel your subscription?
I had a continuous authority on a debit card and despite the changing account types at the bank, which involved getting a new card, and then that new card expiring twice the subscription kept getting charged against the old card.
So I think the only way to stop it completely is to close your account.

My dad had that trouble when McAfee virus scan decided to set up their own repeat debit every year from his credit card, instead of asking for renewal as they once did. He eventually got rid of his internet connection, told McAfee he didn't need their service any more, but the following year they debited him again. He said that, even if you cancel your credit card, the person claiming from you can still chase you for it.

He had a fax number for them, but when he tried to send a fax he was told to enter an extension number?! So he tried to phone them in the USA. There was a waiting list approx 30 mins, at $2 a minute. So he gave up on that.
I eventually e mailed them, several times, from my own 'puter at home and got them to sort it.
But I digress, his bank told him HE could not stop the withdrawal, only McAfee could do that. And even if he cancelled the card they could still chase him for the money.
I was informed by a card company that cancelling a credit card does not stop future automatic payments if you originally set them up. You need to have the repeat transaction cancelled by the person who is claiming it. Apparently the card company can't deny the payment!
Bizarre if you ask me .... I had an Amex blue card on which it turned out I had a yearly subscription. I didn't realise until two years after I had cancelled the card!
