blu ray + surround sound question

Hi everyone,
Question on behalf of a friend.
He has a Sony S880 dvd/surround sound system and he wants to get himself a blu ray player but is unsure as to the compatibility between the s880 5.1 surround system and a blu ray disc/players 7.1 surround capability.
Will adding the blu ray player cause problems or will it operate normally?
