Evening guys,
I just wanted to find out about the kind of situation i would need to be in to move out. I just wanted to know:
What age were you when you left home?
What was your financial situation at the time?
What kind of accomodation did you move into?
I am currently 18 years old, earning approximately 12k in an apprenticeship, and am running a car which i use to get to work and back. Would you say i am in a situation where i could feasibly move out and support myself in a flat/house or whatever?

That would be really cool. Like i say, the only real outgoings for me are rent for where i'm living now, and insurance and fuel for the car. I'm off to ask some mates about what they think!!
I'm assuming renting a house with a few mates would be the way to go yes?

2 = no money at all and we lived in spain i hitchhiked back to the UK
3 = My grandparents - but later i met a girl and they didnt like me having her under their roof so we slept in the car.

The good news is that you're thinking hard about it before baling. I don't know how much running a car costs you, nor your other committments, but the simple thing to do is start with your net monthly income, then subtract *everything* you currently pay for (including everything such as mobile phone, clothing, entertainment etc). Then you know exactly what you've got left and can decide from there.What was your financial situation at the time?

My hunch is that you could either afford the car, or a flat rental, but not both. However only you can do the maths
Sell car, live within walking distance of work (or on a convenient bus/train route).
You're going to spend half your (current) disposable income on rent & bills even for a cheap house share (although I don't know where in the country you are). That's before you take into account food (it will cost more than it does at home!) and beer (you'll drink more I bet).
Do it if you can, but add up the numbers first. Do you *really* need your car? What happens if it goes wrong one month, do you have savings to keep you on the road?

All very good points - i wouldn't want to give up the car, i enjoy it too much! I'd rather stay at home and keep it if i had to! Its a lot to think about, maybe i should wait until i'm earning a bit more and then decide. I think financially it would be possible, but i would have to give up creature comforts such as paying for an expensive phone etc, which im not sure im prepared to do..

Rented flat (Rented from the family property company at a discounted rate). Moved in with my girlfriend and one of my best mates.Still here now 18 months later

I didn't finally leave home until I was 23, but that was because I got on all right with my folks and they had a big house. Then it was a shared house with mates, whilst me and the OH saved for a deposit. If you're aiming for home ownership, there's no point IMO blowing money on anything but the most basic accomodation when you're young and can put up with the downsides, you'll be needing to save every spare penny you can.

This is true it was harder in one way back then and easier in others. When i was young it was normal to bail the home and find a room somewhere. if i recall i was earning £60 per week in an engineering company sweeping floors.Sorry

I'm also 18, and also would love to move out already.
Friends are off at Uni etc.. But the only reason i'm staying here at the moment is because of my job and that i'm paying £20 a week rent and seeing as i've got to pay for my car (Only to my dad) I need the money coming in.
It's why i'm doing things myself now, organizing things myself.. I'm going to Lapland in April and am not going to ask anything about it or orgainzing it myself or anything because I want to prove i'm independant
