I've got a car for sale and I just got this is email and as the subject says "This is dodgy, isnt it?"

I'm mike by name, I am interested in your advert and i would like to ask some details concerning this car before proceeding with the payment.
1. How long have you owned it?
2. Have you owned it from new? If not how many previous owner?
3. Why are you selling it?
4. In your opinion, what sort of condition is it?
5. Any available photo?
6. Last Price?
So, your response to these required information would be highly entertained before proceeding to the next stage. The method of payment is Cheque. Kindly email back, if it's still for sale.

The email is not working so I couldn't respond but all the questions he asked are listed in the ad, just waiting for the I'll send you a cheque for 50K, you send me back 25K and I'll pick the car up next week....

Didnt we have a spate of people on here getting ripped of by cheques that were cancled ?

I seem to remember there is some sort of scam where they can cancel after it has been cashed or somthing

Me think he's duplicitous. Anyway, how else aside from a name would one refer to himself - by barcode or ISIN? Maybe scammers have a recognised code.

You guys sound mighty jumpy to me. You meet all sorts of folk when you try to sell a car. Unless and until you hand over the keys without being paid I can't see there's anything to flap about.

Real buyers will always want to see and try a car before agreeing to purchase.


IIRC even if you cash a cheque and have the money show up in your account it can still bounce.

Yes indeed but like I said, you meet some strange folk and it's a just a question of making sure you've been properly paid before handing over the keys. Don't forget the best con-men are the ones who don't arouse your suspicions....

i've paid for cars by cheque in the past?? i just waited a week until collecting. Back in the days when i used to borrow money off my old man! Dont even think i own a cheque book anymore!

My neighbour sold jis car throuigh Autotrader recentl;y and had loads pof cals from dealers wanmting to buy the car unseen for about 20% below book price. Obviously skimming for desparate people and then probably hagging again when they come to collect it.

yes, charged at between 35p and 50 p per minute from a landline, significantly higher from a mobile.
