Question about the rail network?
Discussion
Private companies are responsible for the running of the trains. But i read that the government gives them money. Do these private companies be it scotrail or who ever make profits? If so why the f
k is the government giving them cash. I`m confused by the situation. Please someone explain.

All our public transport is run by private for-profit companies. And, with guaranteed public money, they don't even need to provide a good service to turn a profit. The tax-payer is, yet again, tucked up like a kipper.
Which political party had this idea? The rail network is one national asset that I believe is genuinely deserving of Government subsidy. It is, potentially, a vital strategic and economic asset. Asking the railways to pay their own way is, at the moment, a bit like asking the Navy to pay their way. In fifty years I suggest we'll be wondering why such as asset was allowed to be so nearly destroyed.

Well imagine how you'd feel if you were living in Manchester up until ~20 days ago and you were under the threat of getting buttf
ked with a congestion charge in order to give these private companies yet more money! Yertis said:

I was under the impression that most of our railways were built privately, then Nationalised under Labour, then privatised once more. But, the government cannot regulate itself in the way it regulates private business (no self control), so Nationalised industries are normally s
t. Yet trains don't do competition very well, you don't normally get a choice of competing trains on one line, so it is all a big cartel. The current war on private transport doesn't help, as the government forcing up the cost of motoring just allows the train and bus companies to raise their fares (they are aware that their real competition is the car). The network is run by Network Rail, the service is operated by TOCs like Virgin who lease the rolling stock from ROSCOs like Porterbrook, HSBC and Angel Trains, some farm out maintenance to companies like Bombardier, others like Alstom do it in house.
NR absorbs loads of money for route upgrades and money has to be found for rolling stock mods for things like extended platform operations which the TOC has to pay for. All this has to be considered against length of contract etc.
