Micro Hi-Fi System recommendations

Senior management has spent the Xmas hols redesigning the living room & has decided that my "old" hi-fi separates will have to be banished to my study as they are too big / ugly etc. & don't fit with her new ideas.

We are therefore looking to get a micro hi fi system and I was wondering are they all pretty much of a muchness sound quality wise ? or are there some particular models I should be looking at out there.

My initial web searches have not turned up much as these type of systems are looked down upon by the cognescenti (sp ?)

ARCAM Solo or The Linn Classik systems come to mind both available in DVD or CD flavours. Then there are the Meridian F80 or Alfred Dunhill Systems. Only extra's would be Speakers.

Sony Gigajuke, nothing else required. Good piece of kit that stores all your cds and mp3s, it can be extended wireless to other rooms and actually sounds decent for such a small system. If your old and require the playing of 78s etc please look elsewhere;)

Of course you could be very sneaky and get something like the Cyrus Seperates or the Musical Fidelity X series.

The F80 doesn't need any additional speakers,they are built in. Sounds mint too.

This is clearly the way to go

If you want a cheaper system though you can't really go too wrong with the small Denon kit.

I heard and bought the last gen Denon and the sound was ace. I've also had a play with the Onkyo 515 and was equally impressed.

I picked up a Denon DM37DAB a few months ago. I chose some alternative speakers (QAcoustic) rather than buying the standard ones, together with some decent quality cable. I am really very impressed with the depth and quality of sound considering the whole lot was only around £300.

Another vote for the Denon. I've got the DM3, had it several years with he standard speakers, and for the size and price it is very good.

Got to say, when I heard this thing I was amazed. I had it in the home for not very long, compared it to the floor standing system already there and there is such little difference that the floor standers have been removed, the front room "looks prettier" for the OH and the sound quality is still there, better even.

OK, it's not at the price point of your Denon, but for CD, DVD, DAB and the sound you get from that thing it's truly fg awesome.

The OH will even listen to stuff instead of the Alba crap we bought for music in the kitchen and as I've heard someplace else, when your OH gets excited about Hifi, you know it's a good thing!

Depends how much you want to spend, I've had some Denon min separates with Kef speakers for years and they've been great. Cheaper option is the Pure Legato - DAB tuner, CD, memory card slot and line in for MP3 players. Don't know what the sound quality's like but other Pure kit I've heard has been good.
