Anyone else had a phone call from someone claiming to be BT and that we were about to be disconnected unless we pay 20 pounds?

They new our surname (not difficult) but when I started to ask questions about how much my last bill was and how much I had paid he claimed he did not have that info and soon after hung up.

The call was from a withheld number, so I rang BT and they confirmed my account was up to date but did not appear concerned about the fact that this took place.

Very little info about this scam on the internet, so bit unsure what the scammers are able to gain from this type of phone call, other than getting my bank account details.

Call the police. It is clearly an attempt to obtain pecuniary advantage by deception (probably your credit card details) and you are unlikely to be the only person. The police have the powers to trace the number that called you.

Thanks for the heads up. It's not just consumers who are getting scammed though. Lots of businesses get calls from "BT" telling them they qualify for a grant for a new phone system, that they have to upgrade to digital because of 21CN or some other rubbish. It would be imprudent of me to say who runs these scams in a public forum, suffice to say that there are some companies out there for whom it is easy to pretend to be BT.
