I used to myself, gave up a good few years ago in the face of rising cost, increasing evidence of the ill effects, and the sheer inconvenience (and this was before smoking was generally prohibited)

I expect it of a cetain sort of person, but it is obvious that some of today's smokers are intelligent, educated people, and yet they cling on to what must be one of the most insidious forms of self destructive behaviour

You will note that I haven't said they shouldn't smoke. It's entirely up to each of us to decide these things.

Not sure what point you are trying to make there, my point is that I am amazed at how many people still smoke. If I had never smoked myself then I would not be in a position to be surprised, as I wouldn't know whether or not it was possible to give up

I consider myself fairly intelligent and yet, knowing all the risks to health involved, I still smoke. I completely agree that to do so is bizarre, illogical, inexplicable behaviour, but I still do it for several reasons;

I'm addicted to it
I rather like it
Chicks dig it
It makes you look cool

I tried smoking this morning, which was my 5th cigarette ever in my life.

Didn't really see the point, plus I couldn't inhale the smoke properly as it would burn my throat (not actually, but feels like it) and I would cough immediately (pussy, I know!)

Perhaps my technique isn't quite right. Meh.

I don't care, for it. I've got my poison (Alcohol). I would never begrudge a smoker his vices, each to their own etc.

They are the ones who can think up clever ideas to justify the habit... and their brains the most able to self-deceive.

I know a very intelligent woman who weighs over 20 stone - but she won't link it to the amount of stuff that goes in the top hole...
