you forget - channel 4 is a business, and as such is run to make profit through advertising revenue etc, so obviously air anything that brings in the ratings. The real problem lies with the braindead morons who enjoy this crap, and who have created this age of instant celebrity, no talent required. Its easy money so we cant blame the z listers!
Channel 4 is stil;l a public service broadcaster though.

"The public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular:
* demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
* appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
* makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
* exhibits a distinctive character."
Celebrity BB must scrape through under the second and fourth points, because it's certainly not 1 & 3!* demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
* appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
* makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
* exhibits a distinctive character."
thats ok in principle but im sure the creative media types would have no trouble packaging BB as a social experiment, as entertainment that combines an insight into human behaviour and therefore has educational qualites. Besides as long as a certain proportion of their schedule meets those criteria, they can show whatever they like within reason - stick on a few documentaries and you have done enough to let you air the crap that brings in the ratings.

But pointing a camera at a sleeping person for a few hours is not TV, unless this is the new testcard Adrian W said:

but there must be enough people watching other wise they wouldnt bother? On its own its not tv but it still meets the broadcast criteria as its part of a bigger programme so they can get away with it - cheaper than showing real tv too so bigger profit margins and thats what its all about.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
