I'm planning a trip with the girlfriend for end of Jan, probably for between 3 and 5 nights but we are flexible. Any recommendations on places to stay and things to do?
Neither of us have had much time to research this yet, and well, PH seems to be so good at these threads...
We really don't know what to expect so any info appreciated.

Highly recommend renting an apartment from them if you can afford it. It usually works out significantly cheaper than hotels for groups of 4 or more, not sure if it's cheaper as a couple, but it's definitely worth the money.

Will do. Is there anything specific I should know about this time of year? I realise the daylight hours will be shorter but does this mean a lot of tourist areas are shut or just that other things are on instead?Do it - awesome place.
If you're going out, bear in mind that the locals don't head out into town until around midnight.
Visit the church above (top of the hill, can't remember exactly where).
Stay in Hotel Holt. Eat in their restaurant (have the puffin).
Visit the Penis Museum if you like.
Go to Blue Lagoon.

Try to book a trip in a 4x4 to take you to the top of a glacier

Bear in mind that in January a lot of these excursions will get cancelled because of the weather, and I didn't find much to do in Reykjavik during the day when the excursions were cancelled...Thats's a good place to look for day trips

I would recommend visiting later in the year when the weather is likely to be better.
Do not forget that Iceland is REALLY expensive (hence us not hiring a car!)

I thought it was very expensive. Probably more so as the exchange rate was better when went.
I was there on business and just remember the freezing rain.
I saw the church and the Prime ministers house/ cottage thingy. but its a long way to go just to see that.
My Friends went on an excursion to the hot springs, and that brought mixed reviews.

A few reasons:- whenever I've seen any documentary or other TV program involving Iceland I've always thought the scenery looked amazing and it would be a good experience
- its a bit different, and we've done the holidays to florida and cruise ship type holidays recently
- girlfriend would like to see the northern lights
Why now?
- exchange rate is in our favour at the moment
- girlfriend is changing jobs and has some time off at the end of this month, so we need to do something then
