Has anyone else had an injury which has led to them having a permanently damaged wrist?

I had a motorbike accident 8 months ago and im still experiencing a fair amount of pain with it. It was an intra-articular comminuted fracture and required external fixation at the time. Ive worked hard on getting the movement back and I now have a good range, particularly on extension and rotation is pretty good also.

The pain comes from pushing things when the wrist is extended. I used to be able to do push ups no problem but now I couldnt do 1 without excruciating pain running along my hand and up my arm.

Im going on an intensive physio course next month for a fortnight to see if it will aid it, but Im not hopeful.

Has anyone else experienced a similar injury and did they find light at the end of the tunnel? Unfortunately my career requires me to be active and fit and this is affecting my progress. Id love to know that in months/years I could go back to being pain free and enjoying all the things that I did prior to the accident.

No guarantees, but fractures remodel for a good couple of years after healing. Keep using it and load it (steadily, not no pain no gain) and it will continue to improve. It's sometimes helpful to make a log of what you can do on a monthly basis, as it's hard to see progress if you're living with it. IYSWIMbiggrin

I broke my distal and radius (amongst other things) in around 1980 due to a head on with an XJ6 on my DT175, took a couple of years to come right, but by and large it has been unnoticable. I had a contract in Oct/Nov that required a fair bit of lifting/carrying, which has made it rear its ugly head again. By and large though, I have had no problems.

Each case is unique, it really depends on your injury, and how well it was treated.

I fell through a window and sliced my are in half about 2 years ago. It sliced through all of my arteries, nerves, tendons and ligaments. Still have minimal feeling on the palm of my hand, and lost some movement. got some pretty graphic photos of it open if you want me to post them up?

Eight months is still a fairly short time, you'll improve on where you are now, IMHO.

I've smacked my knee and wrist too many times on (or off) mountain bikes. Never more than fractures or sprains, however in the cold weather I really do ache badly, and have struggle with some lifting and steps. Will be limping like an old fart long before I get to 40.

It took 7 years for my shoulder to heal completely after a snowboarding crash.

Mr brother had a similar thing after a very high speed, (he told my parents 110 lepton but has secretly admitted to 150 leptons), accident on a bike.

One of the may bones broken was his wrist and a number of bones in his hand. As yours was he had his arm set in place using wiring and structures on the outside of the arm.

He persevered for over a year but with but his movemenr was very limited and the hand/wrist did not look "normal".

He has just had the whole thing re-broken and reset on the advice of his surgeon. He is much happier with it and instantly feels that everything is working better than before this last operation.

some encouraging messages, my specialist did tell me that 2 years would be a benchmark for seeing what the long term effects of the wrist would be, so I guess I need to be more patient. I broke my femur in the same accident but that has come on really well, and the movement in the wrist was coming along well too but then over the last 3 months, it really seems to have stood still. Its really strong when my hand is in line with my arm (i.e punching something or pushing with a fist) but as soon as the hand is extended, its pretty rubbish.

Please if anyone feels compelled to post pictures of their injuries feel free!

I have a screw or two in my scaphoid bone from a bike injury - that was about twenty years ago. I can tell when it's going to snow by how it aches. I also get traffic warnings from Radio Two when the wind is right. biggrin
That last bit was a lie, but it still aches.

I broke my wrist (cannot remember the bones) and my ulna in 1976. By messing around playing as a child with a good friend of mine. It looked like a humbback bridge and the bone was very close to coming though.
Biggest pain I found was the re-growth lump that formed afterwards.

I still get some numbness in my fingers, granching (sp?)/clicking when rotating and if I hold both hands up, the left one tends to twist more to one side. It also aches if I try and support it (wrist mat etc).
Oh, yeah and it aches when its cold.

Now, broken ribs - They are fun...

The femur doesn't do much other than load bearing whereas the radius and ulna rotate round each other. The wrist joint is also pretty complicated with the two rows of bones in the hand (the carpus) articulating on the ends of the ulna and radius. If the fracture compromised any of these joints (which if itwas intra-articular) would be likely then your wrist movement will clearly be affected.

The good news is that a physio should be able to mobilise these joints and give you some exercises.

I broke mine in seven places (including the Ulna and Radius) following a motorcycle accident 22 years ago (christ- am I that old?). Amazingly all the bones stayed in place due to it being a compression fracture- i.e. me extanding my arm to stop myself hitting the road at high speed.
I still have very limited movement and pain if I over extend it or compress the joint. That said, I do a physical job and it hasn't hindered me at all. Like anything in life you tend to adjust to it, so don't worry if it doesn't heal totally unnoticeably. it's likely you'll have a reminder of it for many years to come.

I have a surgical implant into my hand.

Broke it 4 years ago and failed to go to hospital, my own stupid fault! I now have around 30% movement and 25% strength in my right wrist and hand! Thank god I'm a lefty!!

Moral of the story... If it hurts, get it fixed!

Broke my Distal Radial at the beginning of October. Fell on an outstretched arm/hand and crack!
Had 3 pins embedded in my wrist for 5/6weeks, a lot of the time that was more painful than when i actually broke it.

I haven't quite got full movement back yet, and suffer the same problem as the OP, most noticeable if i try to do a press up. It's only been a few months so i'm hoping it'll continue to heal. I guess stretching it and loading it with weight will help, rather than avoiding that situation.

Broken Scaphoid was one of my many injuries from a Motorbike crash a few years ago. For a tiny bone it does not half hurt.
