Restoring luster to white shirts

I was tidying up yesterday and noted that my white shirts are starting to look a little 'foxed' around the collar and cuffs and no longer gleam with shiny whiteness as they once did.

Before I toss them and order some more, is there a quick and easy way to get the dark lines off the collar and cuffs and bring them back up to shiny-ness? I wondered about bleach or something but have no idea of quantity and whether you can even put bleach in a washing machine...

Alternatively, would my laundrette be able to boil wash them and shine them up again?

They're quite nice shirts and I'm loath to chuck them away if there's life in them yet. Suggestions much appreciated...

Vanish for whites is what you want. You can make a paste of the stuff and soak the things first, and then add some to a hot wash afterwards. Brilliant stuff.

Thanks - will pop down to the supermarket and try this later. I tried some Vanish stain remover before wash but something for whites seems like more the thing...

There are two kinds of Vanish powder in tubs - a pink tub and a white tub. Get the white one, it's specifically for whites. The Vanish stain remover in a tube is okay too, but the powder is better. And a hot wash - 60 degrees.

If Vanish can't get them white, bin them.

I think you're missing the point - I see the P and P as more of a add-on to the car chat found elsewhere, in the way that GQ for example, covers the little things that today's gent ought to be aware of.

As such, my thread becomes the equivalent of a side article on sartorial elegance for those who like the finer things such as cars, watches etc. So there.

1) I accept this without defence. I watched Ocean's 11 the other night and was irritated about the fact that Clooney's shirts were positively gleaming whereas mine were looking a bit tired.

2) January. Skint. Whitening powder cheaper than new shirts.

I do this. Greeting people with "what ho" is acceptable and wears off. Saying "Tinkerty Tonk" instead of goodbye is one step to far though.

Quite. I biffed along to the shops at lunchtime yesterday and called my aunt 'aged ancestor' over Christmas. Later, I shall probably describe someone as a tough old egg and take a moment to fix myself a spot due to not quite feeling equal to the pressure of events. There is a certain Bulldog spirit within old Gylen that has oft drawn comment but nonetheless, there are limits!
