There seem to be some financially savvy folk here on PH, so I'm going to open myself upto a bit of pisstaking with a lame question.
I've just sold my house and am going to move into rented accomatadion for a few years. I'll have £80,000 equity to put away somewhere safe.
What's the best thing to do with it? I've never had a decent sum of money before and am a complete ignoramus regarding ISA's and the like.
I know I should speak to a pro, but hey, PH knows everything.

£80,000 ain't a lot anymore. Stick it in a one-year fixed bond so you cant get your hands on it!

Put it into moneysupermarket.com. Can do it and compare with all the different types of savings accounts.

Quick search gives 5% from 1 year bond (investing full 80k) with Anglo Irish. Im guessing you have to take acount of tax though.

Yeah in the current climate, if you're looking at a 5-year timescale max, you would be best off finding the best available deposit account. There will be some fantastic investment returns available over the next few years but when they will start is anybody's guess. In any case, you would have to be prepared to take on a degree of risk to achieve this.

Put the lot on Barclays shares.

Closed 161 today.

Added this so I can come back to you in 3 years time and ask you what 160k smells like.

Isn't buying gold supposed to be a good investment at the moment, don't know where you'd go to invest though.

Yes, but what has he been buying? More of his own stock I expect, as any drop in berkshire hathaway will be based on market sentiment, not financialfigures. He'll buy back into his own company at a discount.
